Regardless of how much you love and care about someone, you do not want to share their miserable cold. Anyone who has had sick children or a sick partner knows how to not get sick yourself. There are a few ways to help boost your immunity, especially when it comes to the colder months. Having a viral transmission can spread fairly quickly within your home within a few days of someone first coming home with symptoms. There are a few steps you take in each room to help keep germs at bay. Make sure that you clean any shared surfaces including keyboards, remote controls, door frame the table and more! Below I’ll share a few ways to keep things clean and sanitary free with a few common rooms in your home.

Bedroom

If your partner is sick or your kids share a room this can be a little extreme, especially if one of you is under the weather. Here are a few tips to keep things as germ free as possible. You’ll want to keep their sheets clean. Although you might not do laundry every day, having to change the sheets, especially the pillow case, that your loved one coughs or sneezes on needs to be washed. Having fresh air into the room can protect you by moving out the germs into the open. Open any doors or windows during the day so the air moves throughout the house. Another tip would be to put kleenex in the room near the nightstand and then a trash can near by so they can throw away their dirty tissue even in the middle of the night.

Living Room/ Kitchen:

Keep your distance from your kids if they are grumpy and want to stay in the living room instead of their bedroom. Make sure they know to cough or sneeze into their elbow to help spread germs. If your kids are younger, make sure that they don’t share their toys. Many of them can put them in their mouth but they need to be cleaned or disinfected with wipes right away. This also works in the kitchen as well. Keep your fridge stocked up with lots of fluids such as water and fresh juice to keep them hydrated. Similar to your fridge, have your pantry with healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables and soups on hand. Make sure to run your utensils and dishes through the dishwasher on a high heat cycle to get rid of germs as well.

Bathroom

While this may be one of the rooms we hate cleaning, especially with all the germs that can be in this room, it’s still important to clean it as much as possible when everyone is sick. This is a shared room with everyone using the faucet handles and doorknobs. You’ll want to make sure everyone is washing their hands with soap and water and wiping up any excess water droplets around the sink and toilet.
